Perceptual Basis of Action

Perceptual aspects of perceptual/intrinsic control of action. Topics include: vision, hearing, echolocation, inertial sensing, mechano-sensing, haptics, chemotaxis, electrotaxis, and integrating information from different perceptual systems; prospective perceptual information for stabilizing the body and perceptual systems, perceiving affordances, timing actions, intercepting, manipulating, and locomoting on foot or in a vehicle.

Visual control of standing balance. Moving
the surrounding ‘room’ visually induces
body sway in the same direction.
(Lee & Lishman 1975; Lee 1980)
Visually sensing direction of locomotion. Moving the surrounding room can change the direction in which a person senses they are walking. (Lishman & Lee 1973)

Visual control of lateral balance when running. Tilting the surrounding ‘room’ visually induces body tilt in the same direction. (Owen & Lee 1986)
Stabilizing the head. A hovering pied kingfisher visually stabilizes its head on its prey while its body pivots around it.
(Owen & Lee 1986)
